Gastric acid suppressants, such as proton pump inhibitors and histamine type-2 receptor antagonists, are among the most overprescribed and misused categories of drugs in both human and veterinary medicine. Still, there are times when their use is necessary.
Dr. Tolbert, one of the authors of the ACVIM consensus statement on rational administration of gastrointestinal protectants, shares three questions to consider when deciding whether to prescribe a gastric acid suppressant. She also reviews findings from research studies that have been published since the consensus statement was published.
