Understanding How Age-Associated Changes of the Immune System Lead to Immune Dysfunction

Speaker:

Donald B. Palmer, PhD, PGCAP, FHEA, FRSB

Event date: 25 May 2023 Lausanne, Switzerland

Advanced aging correlates with a reduced ability to mount an effective immune response, a process known as immunosenescence. While the precise mechanisms of immunosenescence have not been fully explained, both innate and adaptive immunity show age-associated decline in function.

Thymic involution is one of the most recognisable changes in the aging immune system and is believed to be intimately linked to features of peripheral immunosenescence. The mechanism of age-associated thymic involution is still not fully identified, but evidence suggests it likely involves both intrinsic and extrinsic defects.
