Continuous innovation
Purina has been a pioneer in the science of pet health with over 120+ years of nutritional expertise that has not only resulted in more than 500 published papers and 1,700 granted and filed patents worldwide, but also in breakthroughs that have redefined and shaped the understanding of pet nutrition.
We have been pushing the boundaries of pet nutrition for nearly 100 years, and we continue
to deliver new advancements today. Here are some of the highlights of Purina’s contributions to the field of pet nutrition.
Body Condition System is developed
Purina created the first widely used and scientifically validated body condition score system. The tool provides a simple method for estimating body fat coverage and determining a pet’s optimal body condition, regardless of breed or body weight.
First veterinary prescribed hydrolyzed diet to nutritionally manage food allergies
Purina research showed that denaturing proteins through hydrolysis makes it less likely to trigger an immune response. The result is the first clinical diet using only hydrolyzed proteins for dogs with food allergies.
First diet to manage feline diabetes with high protein and minimal carbohydrates
Purina’s work is revolutionary in addressing feline diabetes through a low carbohydrate, high protein diet. This is significantly different from traditional diets that typically use high fiber. A clinical study showed that 89% of cats fed Purina’s diet had an overall reduction in insulin requirements, with 33% no longer needing any insulin.
First diet to apply nutrigenomics to help manage disease
The expression of multiple genes is altered in osteoarthritis, resulting in inflammation and the production of destructive enzymes. Purina identified specific amounts of omega-3 fatty acids to help improve mobility. Clinical research confirms the efficacy of this nutritional intervention through a reduction in lameness.
First probiotic supplement for cats and dogs in a therapeutic diet range
Probiotics can help promote intestinal balance and a healthy immune system. Purina was the first to launch a shelf-stable probiotic supplement proven to enhance immune function and help manage diarrhea.
First well dog diet clinically proven to improve canine cognitive function
At approximately age 7, the glucose metabolism in a dog’s brain begins to change, affecting cognitive function including memory, learning and decision-making. Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) provide an alternative energy source for the aging brain. Purina research revealed significantly enhanced cognitive function in older dogs when fed a diet that included MCTs.
